Cancer Registries of Central and Northern California
The Cancer Registries of Central and Northern California is a California Health Collaborative program that fulfills a subcontract from the Public Health Institute’s Cancer Registry project through the State Department of Public Health.
The Cancer Registry of Central California collects data regarding the incidence of cancer among California residents in the counties of: Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne.
Located in Chico, the Cancer Registry of Northern California collects and manages cancer data from the 16 counties that compose Region 6 of the California Cancer Registry (Butte, Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Napa, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sonoma, Tehama and Trinity).
These registries serve as a community resource and provide information on cancer incidence to local health workers, educators, researchers, legislators, as well as residents of the regions.
Data is used to calculate incidence and mortality, ascertain time trends, evaluate treatment alternatives and other predictors of survival, and assess the success of cancer screening programs.
To perform cancer surveillance registry staff develops reporting relationships with hospitals, clinics, pathology labs, and physicians’ offices. Data are gathered through a variety of methods, including direct transmission of cases to the registry office by hospital registrars, vendor abstractors hired by hospitals, and site visits by registry staff members.
