Foothill Middle School S.T.O.P. Program

The Students Targeted with Opportunities for Prevention (S.T.O.P.) program is intended to provide early-intervention services to “at-risk” students and their families. The objective of S.T.O.P. is to mitigate the factors that increase the juvenile’s likelihood of entering the juvenile justice system, re-offend, or require out-of-home placement. The S.T.O.P. program is geared towards “at-risk” juveniles ages 11-14, sixth through eighth grades that are not on formal probation, and their families. In order for any student to be referred into the S.T.O.P. program they, must meet at least one of the following criteria:

1. Family Issues  2. School Issues  3. Substance-abuse Issues  4. Pre-delinquency Issues

Program components include parent empowerment groups, youth development groups, family empowerment, youth recreation activities, family recreation activities, tutoring/academic enrichment, juvenile delinquency prevention, mentoring, and anger management.

Parent Empowerment

The parent group is based on the principles of adult education - it builds on what parents already know and do for themselves and their children.

Youth Development

The youth groups cover a multitude of subject areas including: resistance skills/peer pressure, communication, conflict management, stress management/diversity training, defenses/coping mechanisms, chemical dependency and substance abuse amongst youth, relationships, and goal setting/leadership development.

Family Empowerment

After S.T.O.P. participants and their parents have developed basic communication skills, we integrate the families to practice those skills together. The family meetings create a safe environment for all members to practice new communication skills and create new methods for addressing problems and conflict that they can then integrate into their daily lives.

Youth Recreation

The after-school program consists of academic enrichment, tutoring, recreation, multi cultural activities, and monthly incentive trips based on individual and group needs. Examples of monthly incentive activities include: local sporting events, movies, pizza parties, ice-skating, museums, arcades, and family entertainment centers etc.

Family Recreation

The activities are planned to strengthen family functioning by providing pleasurable family experiences. The events will also bring the involved families together, strengthening community, and providing a sense of mutual concern and responsibility.

Juvenile Delinquency Prevention

Program participants participate in a series of interactive trips, which allows each person to analyze their current situation and where they would like to see themselves in the future. When it comes to juvenile delinquency prevention, it has always been our belief that the best approach is that of truth and consequence.
