Fresno County Rural Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program
The Fresno County Rural Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (RTPP) is a grant-funded program under the California Health Collaborative, through the California Department of Public Health, Office of Family Planning-Community Challenge Grant. The program runs on a five-year funding cycle; July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2010.
The RTPP Program offers students the opportunity to “identify and carry out character building activities that promote positive self esteem, self control and positive view of personal future.” This is achieved through fun activities, class discussions, role-plays, videos and much more.
The RTPP Program uses an evidence-based curriculum called, Safer Choices. This curriculum covers topics relating to teen pregnancy prevention, sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) and HIV. It teaches students refusal skills through the use of role-plays, group activities and class discussions. The curriculum lessons include an anonymous question box that allows students to ask questions in total anonymity from their peers. This has been effective since students are less shy to ask and learn more about their topics of interest.
In addition to the curriculum, the RTPP Program incorporates other learning and fun activities to keep the students involved. Students enjoy outdoor activities that teach them the value of teamwork and help enhance their communication skills.
The RTPP Program offers informational presentations to parent groups, teens, and communities on topics of interest, such as: parent and teen communication, STD’s/HIV, birth control, and refusal skills.
Finally, the RTPP Program sponsors the annual “Rebounding to Success” teen conference that is held at Reedley College. The conference offers 8-10 workshops on various topics of interest for the teens, such as: anger management, pregnancy prevention, STD/HIV prevention, teen suicide prevention, teen relationships, and much more. Keynote and motivational speakers also form part of the conference. Breakfast and lunch are provided for all participants and the event is free of cost.
All students at Parlier, Sanger and Firebaugh High Schools are welcome to join the program. Students must complete a registration packet that requires parent consent that allows them to participate in the curriculum sessions. Students must attend at all sessions and incentives are provided for their participation.
