Fresno Healthy Kids
Data obtained from the California Health Interview Survey conducted in 2001 shows that about 26,000 children living in Fresno County are uninsured. Many of these children, 67% are eligible for Medi-Cal or Healthy Families. However, a third of these children (8,500) are not eligible for any federal/state-subsidized insurance program. Since September 2005 First 5 Fresno County has funded the Fresno Healthy Kids Program (FHK) to bridge this gap. Research shows that children with health insurance are more likely to access health care. It gives families needed financial protection in case of severe illness, and makes it more affordable to see a doctor regularly so that small health problems don’t become big ones.
Fresno Healthy Kids’ goal is to provide comprehensive healthcare coverage to all uninsured children between the ages of 0-5 who live in Fresno County and whose family income is at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level ($63,600 annual income for a family of four). Fresno Healthy Kids contracts with Health Net of California, Delta Dental and SafeGuard Vision to ensure that children enrolled in FHK have access to health, mental health, pharmacy, dental and vision care.
