Teen Scene
Teen Scene is a community-based teen pregnancy prevention program, that has been administered by California Health Collaborative since 1997. This project is funded by a Community Challenge Grant from the California Department of Public Health, Office of Family Planning. The current 5-year contract will provide implementation resources through June 30, 2010.
The goals of the Butte County Community Challenge Grant Program are to:
- delay the onset of sexual activity among local youth;
- prevent pregnancies and STD’S/STI’S among sexually active adolescents;
- increase the ability of parents and adolescents to communicate effectively with each other, thereby reducing early pregnancy and other high risk behaviors.
- support and encourage the development of confident, competent and caring youth; and
- provide opportunities for these youth to contribute to their community, by applying their skills to implement value-based social events for their peers.
To achieve these goals the Teen Scene conducts a variety of on-going activities.
Prevention Education: Program Manager and Peer Educators facilitate multi-session discussion groups that provide weekly opportunities to explore age-appropriate topics, develop self-respect, clarify personal/family values and improve communication skills. Sessions for 5th-8th grade youth use the Teen Outreach Program curriculum, which is particularly effective at building a safe and respectful peer group. Sessions for 9th –12th grade youth use the Street Wise to Sex Wise curriculum, focused on providing medically accurate reproductive health information, improving decision making and refusal skills, and helping teens choose and maintain healthy peer relationships. Both of these curriculums have been professionally evaluated and found to be consistently effective at improving youth outcomes and reducing risk-taking behaviors.
Youth Leadership Development: After-school programming that: 1) provides homework help and prevention education, 2) teaches strategic planning through youth-adult partnerships, 3) creates opportunities to implement values-based social events for peers, and 4) serves as a site for safe, supervised recreational activities.
